Quick Overview

Having suffered from panic disorders for much of her life, Austin native Laura LeMond founded Mosaic Weighted Blankets as a way to help others  who suffered from similar problems. Mosaic Weighted Blankets are an innovative type of bedding that use deep pressure touch stimulation (DPTS) to help calm anxiety, promote relaxation, and healthy sleep.

Long used by mental health professionals to help those with sensory processing disorders, anxiety disorders, and other sensory challenges, weighted blankets have made their way into mainstream culture as a drug-free, powerful tool to improve sleep. Weighted blankets rely on DPTS to simulate the feeling of a hug, reducing the stress hormone cortisol while boosting the production of serotonin, which turns into melatonin to induce sleep.

Handmade and sewn in Austin, Texas, Mosaic Weighted Blankets are crafted from pure cotton or minky fabrics and filled with non-toxic, hypoallergenic, BPA-free plastic pellets. Blankets are quilted into squares to ensure the pellets remain evenly distributed across the blanket, and each pocket is cushioned with a small bit of polyfil.

Mosaic Weighted Blankets come in a huge variety of weights, ranging from 5 to 25 lbs. For best results, manufacturers recommend a blanket that is around 10 percent of your body weight. Blankets are also available in different sizes, including twin, full, queen, and king size.

What Testers Say

Mosaic Weighted Blankets are filled with BPA-free, hypoallergenic, FDA-compliant plastic pellets and a polyfill material. However, our testers found that the plastic pellets can be felt through the cover and may be noisy and “bean-bag-like”, even with the polyfill cushion.

Criteria

This category rates how much warmth a weighted blanket provides. Some blankets will keep you warm in cold temperatures while some require that you bundle up with an additional blanket or duvet.

What Testers Say

Because of the minimal insulation provided by the thin inner polyfill, the cotton fabric allows the interior pellets to acclimate to the surrounding climate. For those who sleep cooler, these blankets may require an additional blankets or duvet covers on colder nights.

Criteria

Breathable weighted blankets retain less heat and will keep users from sleeping too hot. Breathability results from good airflow and moisture-wicking properties.

Rating

One major complaint we had regarding both the cotton and minky versions is the ease at which you can feel the plastic pellets within, giving the blankets a bean bag-like feel.
