Brentwood Home Oceano Mattress Review

The Bottom Line.

  • The Brentwood Home Oceano is a luxury hybrid made with pressure-relieving memory foam and two coil layers for enhanced support.
  • Zoned perimeter coils ensure strong edge support.
  • Thanks to a moisture-wicking wool layer and strong airflow through the coils, the Oceano offers very good temperature neutrality.

Brentwood Home Oceano Mattress Overview

Brentwood Home Oceano Mattress Overview

Brentwood Home is a U.S.-based mattress brand that specializes in beds made from sustainably sourced materials. The company currently offers four individual mattress models. This review will take a closer look at the Oceano, Brentwood Home’s best-selling luxury hybrid.

The Oceano is constructed with a Euro-top cover containing comfort layers of organic wool, gel-infused memory foam, and pocketed minicoils. The mattress also features a high-density polyfoam transitional layer and a support core with 8-inch pocketed coils. Altogether, the mattress measures 14.5 inches thick. In terms of firmness, the Oceano is considered medium-firm, or a 6 on the 1-10 firmness scale.

Keep reading to learn all about the Brentwood Home Oceano. Our review includes construction details, prices, and mattress ratings from verified owner experiences and our own product testing. • Sleepers who prefer a balance of body-conforming and responsiveness. The Oceano conforms to the body somewhat closely while maintaining a bouncy feel. This creates a combined feeling of sleeping “on” and sleeping “in” the mattress.
  • People in the lightweight or average weight groups. The Oceano has earned positive reviews from sleepers across different weight groups, but the most favorable ratings have come from those who weigh 230 pounds or less.
  • Hot sleepers. The Oceano offers very good temperature neutrality. Both coil layers promote strong airflow, while the top wool layer wicks away moisture from sleepers to keep them comfortable. The cover – made of Tencel lyocell derived from eucalyptus – is also fairly breathable.
  • Couples. The Oceano isolates motion better than many competing hybrids, but its surface also provides great responsiveness for sex.

Not Recommended for...

  • Sleepers who prefer a traditional innerspring feel. The Oceano is fairly responsive, but it lacks the signature bounce of classic innerspring beds.

Ratings Summary

Our testing team conducted an extensive evaluation of the Brentwood Home Oceano. Our review and rating process consists of three parts: in-house evaluation, external sleep testing, and data collection of verified owner experiences. To learn more about our review process, read our methodology here.

Our performance criteria and ratings for the bed are listed in the table below.

As you can see, the Oceano earned favorable ratings across the board. For a detailed look at each performance rating, check out our full breakdown below.

Sleep Position Ratings

As part of our ratings process, we evaluated the Brentwood Home Oceano across different body types and preferred sleep positions. In addition to physical testing, we surveyed our sleep expert team and analyzed reviews from verified mattress owners and customers. Our findings are listed in the table below.

For more information on sleeping positions please see our guides for side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers.

How Is the Brentwood Home Oceano Constructed?

Cover

The Oceano’s quilted cover is made from Tencel lyocell fabric derived from eucalyptus tree fibers. This material is very breathable and a has a silky-soft feel. The side panels are equipped with upholstered handles for easier lifting and moving, as this mattress is quite heavy, even compared to other hybrids.

Comfort Layers

The Oceano’s comfort layers are contained in a quilted Euro-top cover. Traditional Euro-top layers have foam or fiber padding, and are intended to make the mattress surface feel softer. The Oceano’s Euro-top is slightly different because it contains three individual comfort layers. The Euro-top is hand-tufted to help these materials maintain a uniform feel.

The topmost layer consists of GOTS-certified organic wool from New Zealand. This material is naturally breathable and has moisture-wicking properties, resulting in cooler surface temperatures for sleepers.

The second comfort layer features 2 inches of 2 PCF gel memory foam. This low-density material has an indentation load deflection (ILD) of 14, making it exceptionally soft. The third comfort layer is composed of 2.5-inch pocketed minicoils, which add extra support and also reinforce the bed’s responsive feel.

Transitional Layer

A transitional layer of 1.8 PCF polyfoam is located beneath the minicoil layer. This high-density material prevents sleepers from sinking through the comfort layers and coming into contact with the support coil layer, which has a much firmer and denser feel.

Support Layers

The Oceano’s support core is built with 8-inch pocketed coils. The coils are zoned to provide enhanced support to the sleeper’s shoulders, back, and hips while cradling the lighter areas of their body. The perimeter coils are also thicker to reinforce the edges and prevent excessive sinkage when people get in and out of bed.

Mattress Height

The Oceano measures 14.5 inches thick, making it a high-profile mattress. The bed’s above-average height ensures ample space for thick comfort and transitional layers without sacrificing coil strength. As a result, the Oceano offers close body-conforming but also feels exceptionally supportive and responsive.

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

The Oceano is considered medium-firm. Thanks to the wool and memory foam layers, the mattress has a plush and conforming feel, but its coil-on-coil design helps to maintain an even plane for sleepers and makes the surface fairly responsive.

Most sleepers experience a combination of sleeping “on” and sleeping “in” the mattress. This is typical for hybrid models with thicker comfort systems, but differs from the exceptionally springy feel of traditional innerspring mattresses.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

Next, let’s take an in-depth look at our performance ratings for the Oceano. Each rating is based on findings from our internal and external testing teams, as well as reviews from verified Oceano owners.

Durability

Brentwood Home first released the Oceano in 2016. We have not had sufficient time to test this model against the average mattress lifespan of six to eight years. Therefore, our durability rating is based on the bed’s quality of construction and materials, owner experiences, and Brentwood Home’s overall reputation.

We estimate the Oceano will perform for seven to seven and a half years before a replacement mattress is needed. This expected lifespan is longer than average for a hybrid, and can be attributed to the bed’s durable materials and design. The coil-on-coil construction and zoned support core ensure great stability and minimal sinkage around the edges. The organic wool in the top layer is also fairly durable.

However, the memory foam layer – which is fairly low density – may begin to deteriorate before the Oceano’s other components. This may lead to loss of shape and uneven support as the mattress nears the end of its lifespan. To protect the Oceano from wear and tear, Brentwood Home recommends rotating the mattress head-to-foot every month for the first six months, followed by regular rotations every six months.

Motion Isolation

To evaluate the Oceano for motion isolation, we asked two testers to lie down side-by-side on the mattress. One tester rolled around while the other felt for their partner’s motion transferring across the surface.

The Oceano demonstrated above-average motion isolation thanks to its thick comfort system, which allows the mattress to absorb and minimize most motion transfer. Comparatively, hybrid models with lower profiles and fewer comfort layers tend to feel much more responsive, and this can limit their motion-isolating abilities.

Off-Gassing

Our testers noticed some moderate off-gassing odor when unboxing the Oceano, but found the smells had mostly dissipated when they re-evaluated the mattress a few days later. This is typical for a hybrid or innerspring model. Coil layers generally promote steady airflow, and this effectively clears out unwanted smells. All-foam support cores, on the other hand, don’t circulate air as well and tend to trap odor.

Pressure Relief

Our testers evaluated the Oceano for pressure relief by lying down on a sensory pad that monitors pressure build-up in the shoulders, back, hips, and other areas of the body. The testers also switched positions to see if pressure increased or decreased when lying on their sides, back, or stomach.

Our testing shows the Oceano alleviates a fair amount of pressure for sleepers, particularly those who weigh 230 pounds or less. The thick comfort system contours closely to the body, which can improve spinal alignment and reduce pressure points for side sleepers. The coil-on-coil structure also maintains an even plane for back and stomach sleepers, resulting in minimal sagging and very little added pressure.

Temperature Neutrality

The Oceano offers very good temperature neutrality. The top layer of organic wool is very breathable, and helps keep sleepers cool by wicking moisture away from their body. Both coil layers also promote steady airflow to keep the mattress at a comfortable temperature.

Hybrids generally excel at temperature neutrality thanks to their air-circulating coils, and models like the Oceano with breathable comfort layers offer better-than-average cooling. Mattresses with solid-foam support cores usually sleep the warmest because they absorb and trap more body heat from sleepers.

Edge Support

To evaluate the Oceano for edge support, we asked testers to sit along the perimeter of the mattress as an owner might do when getting in and out of bed. The testers also took turns lying near the edges to check for stability and feelings of “roll-off.”

Edge support proved to be a key strength of the mattress during these tests. This can be attributed to the Oceano’s dual coil layers. The support core is zoned with lower-gauge (thicker) coils along the perimeter, which help withstand compression and prevent significant sinkage from occurring. The pocketed minicoil comfort layer offers extra reinforcement, as well.

Noise

Our testers did not notice too much noise from the Oceano during our assessments. As the mattress ages, its coils may begin to produce more squeaks and creaks, and this can lead to some sleep disruptions for owners. However, pocketed coils are generally quieter than other mattress coil types, and we don’t anticipate any major noise-related issues with the mattress.

Sex

The Oceano conforms closely but also has a fairly responsive surface, creating a balanced feel many couples consider optimal for sex. The comfort layers provide decent traction, but the coils give the mattress noticeable springiness that allows couples to use the entire surface. The pocketed coils are also relatively quiet, making the Oceano a discreet mattress for sex.

Sleeper Ratings

The ideal firmness and thickness settings for a mattress largely depend on a sleeper’s body weight, shape, and preferred sleep position. In order to better inform our readers and avoid subjectivity in our review, our team evaluated the bed with sleep testers of varying body types and position preferences.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

Our lightweight testers felt very comfortable on the Oceano. Side sleepers note adequate cushioning for the shoulders and hips, which can improve spinal alignment and alleviates pressure throughout the body. For back and stomach sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds, the mattress conforms closely enough to reduce pressure points but does not sag too much, thanks in part to its supportive coil-on-coil design.

Side sleepers generally prefer soft to medium-soft mattresses. Firmer beds do not conform as closely, which can lead to added pressure and an uneven sleep surface. The Oceano is medium-firm, but its thick comfort layers allow the bed to conform closely – even for lighter people.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

The best overall ratings from the Oceano came from our testers in the average weight group. Back sleepers were especially impressed with the bed’s balance of pressure relief and sag-free support. Side sleepers noted ample cushioning and better spinal alignment, while stomach sleepers did not sink too deeply into the mattress – a common issue for people who use this position.

The ideal mattress for most people in the average weight group falls between medium-soft and medium-firm. Softer mattresses are often too prone to sagging while firmer models don’t conform closely enough, and this can cause more pressure. With its medium-firm feel, the Oceano is ideal for many sleepers weighing between 130 and 230 pounds.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

Our heavyweight tester ratings for the Oceano were positive. That said, they did not feel as comfortable or supported on the mattress as our average weight or lightweight testers. Heavier side sleepers sagged a bit too much around the hips. For back and stomach sleepers, the primary issue was uneven support due to sinking around the midsection.

People who weigh more than 230 pounds usually prefer medium-firm to firm mattresses with thick support systems. Softer beds sag too much, leading to added aches and pains. The Oceano is medium-firm and has a robust coil-on-coil design, but the comfort layers conform a bit too closely for some heavier people and this can affect how supportive the mattress feels.

How Does the Brentwood Home Oceano Compare to Other Beds?

We encourage all mattress shoppers to browse different brands and models in order to find their most suitable option. In this next section, we’ll see how the Oceano compares to other Brentwood Home mattresses and some similarly constructed models from competing brands.

Brentwood Home Oceano vs. Brentwood Home Crystal Cove

Brentwood Home’s Crystal Cove is a flippable hybrid mattress. One side features a charcoal-infused memory foam comfort layer with a medium-soft feel, while the other side has a natural latex comfort layer with a medium-firm feel. This creates two distinct surfaces on the same bed, each one bolstered by a shared, 8-inch pocketed coil support core.

The Crystal Cove, like the Oceano, offers a balance of body-conforming and responsiveness that can be likened to both sleeping “on” and sleeping “in” the mattress. However, the Crystal Cove does not provide the same support for stomach sleepers, and they may experience more sagging as a result. Edge support is also better for the Oceano due to its coil-on-coil design, which reinforces the perimeter better than the Crystal Cove’s single coil layer.

The Crystal Cove costs slightly less than the Oceano, but both models are considered high-value hybrids due to their below-average price-points. Sleepers who appreciate the versatility of flippable mattresses should consider the Crystal Cove, but the Oceano is more supportive – particularly for stomach sleepers.

Brentwood Home Oceano vs. Brentwood Home Cypress

The Cypress from Brentwood Home is available as an all-foam or pocketed coil hybrid mattress. Additionally, customers can choose from an 11-inch profile with a medium feel or a 13-inch profile with a medium-firm feel. Additionally, all versions include a breathable cover made of rayon from bamboo.

The all-foam Cypress alleviates pressure for most sleepers and provides strong motion isolation, while the hybrid is better suited for cooler sleepers those who prefer more responsive mattresses. Two firmness options for each design also ensure most shoppers can find a suitable setting regardless of their body type or preferred sleep position. Compared to this product selection, the Oceano may be a bit more limiting for customers.

The Oceano is fairly low-cost compared to other hybrids, but all-foam and hybrid Cypress models have much more affordable price-points. Sleepers who prefer the pressure-relieving cradle of memory foam should opt for the all-foam Cypress, while the hybrid Cypress and the Oceano are both better suited to hot sleepers, stomach sleepers, and people who like a mix of conforming and responsiveness.

Brentwood Home Oceano vs. Avocado Green

The Avocado Green is a latex hybrid mattress. Available in medium-firm and firm settings, the Avocado Green is constructed with organic wool and natural latex comfort layers over 8-inch pocketed coils. The mattress is exceptionally responsive, making it great for sex, but the Oceano provides better motion isolation and pressure relief due to its memory foam comfort layer that conforms more closely to the body.

Like other natural latex hybrids, the Avocado Green is quite durable and has an expected lifespan of at least seven and a half years. The ventilated latex layers, coupled with strong airflow through the coils, give the Avocado Green excellent temperature neutrality and allow it to sleep cooler than the Oceano.

The Avocado Green and Oceano have comparable price-points, as well as similar sleep trial and warranty offers. Heavier people and those who like very responsive mattresses may find the Avocado Green more comfortable, while lightweight individuals and people who prefer a balance of body-conforming and responsiveness should choose the Oceano instead.

Brentwood Home Oceano vs. Brooklyn Bedding Bloom

The Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid is constructed with a ventilated Talalay latex comfort layer and 8-inch pocketed coils. These sturdy materials provide above-average durability and edge support. The Bloom Hybrid also offers excellent temperature neutrality thanks to strong airflow and a breathable, moisture-wicking cover made of organic cotton and natural wool.

The Bloom Hybrid is available in soft (3.5), medium (6), and firm (7.5) settings. This selection ensures most shoppers can find a suitable design regardless of their body type or preferred sleep position. The Oceano is a bit more limiting, but still a great option for those seeking a medium-firm hybrid that conforms closely while feeling fairly responsive.

The Bloom Hybrid is a bit more expensive than the Oceano, and has a price-point that is more on par with the average hybrid model. Those who appreciate the highly responsive and supportive feel of latex will probably prefer the Bloom Hybrid, while the Oceano is better suited to sleepers who enjoy the deep conforming of memory foam and enhanced coil-on-coil support.

Read our full Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid Mattress Review.

Brentwood Home Oceano vs. The WinkBed

The WinkBed is a luxury innerspring available in multiple firmness settings. The standard WinkBed, a coil-on-coil model, is offered with medium-soft (4.5), medium-firm (6.5), and firm (7.5) feels. The WinkBed Plus, which swaps the top coil layer for 3 inches of latex, has a firm (8) feel and is specifically designed for heavier people.

Aside from firmness selection, the Oceano and WinkBed share similar designs and have earned similar performance ratings. Both beds circulate air very well through their coil layers to maintain very good temperature neutrality, and zoned support coils ensure strong edge support with minimal sinkage.

The WinkBed is the more expensive mattress model, but still reasonably priced given its quality of materials and construction. This mattress may be the best option for customers seeking a medium-soft or firm model. For those seeking a medium-firm feel, the Oceano offers comparable quality at a lower cost.
