Amerisleep AS3 (All-foam) Highlights…
- The all-foam AS3 delivers a traditional memory foam feel with close and consistent body-contouring and pressure relief throughout the body
- The foam absorbs motion and eliminates transfer, which can reduce sleep disruptions for couples
- Due to its medium feel and deep conforming, the mattress is well suited to people who weigh up to 230 pounds – side sleepers in particular.
Amerisleep AS3 (Hybrid) Highlights…
- The hybrid AS3 combines the deep pressure relief of memory foam and the strong support of a coil system
- The bed’s zoned pocketed coils are a bit thicker around the perimeter, resulting in sturdy edge support and less sinkage when people get in and out of bed
- Steady airflow through the coil system allows the mattress to maintain a cool core temperature
Purple Mattress Highlights...
- The Purple Grid conforms and alleviates pressure much like memory foam, but its open-grid structure delivers strong air circulation. For this reason, the mattress offers excellent temperature neutrality compared to other all-foam beds.
- Thanks to consistent motion isolation and lack of noise when bearing weight, this mattress is a good choice for people who tend to wake up when their partner moves in bed.
- The Purple Mattress has a lower price-point compared to both versions of the AS3.
Sleep Position Ratings
Amerisleep AS3
Although the all-foam and hybrid AS3 models have distinct designs, both mattresses share the same medium feel. This makes them more comfortable for some people based on their weight and normal sleep position, and less so for others. After testing both versions of the AS3, we’ve found these mattresses are best suited to people who weigh less than 130 pounds. Sleepers in this weight range usually feel more comfortable on soft to medium beds because they deliver more contouring and pressure relief, whereas firmer mattresses won’t conform as closely and may feel excessively stiff.
Sleep testers weighing between 130 and 230 pounds also report good overall comfort and support. This is especially true of side sleepers. The mattress provides ample padding to support side sleepers and promote even spinal alignment, which can alleviate pressure points throughout the body. Back and stomach sleepers in this weight range felt more sinkage around the midsection, but found the mattress reasonably supportive.
These mattresses may not be as suitable for people who weigh more than 230 pounds. Since they have medium feels, heavier individuals are more susceptible to deep sinkage that affects how supportive the mattress feels and can cause added pressure. The hybrid AS3 offers more support than the all-foam model, but our testers in this weight range sank quite a bit on both models.
Purple Mattress
The Purple Mattress feels noticeably firmer than either AS3 model, but this mattress is also more than 2 inches shorter. Sleeping on a low-profile mattress like this one can be uncomfortable for some sleepers, especially those who weigh more than 230 pounds. Despite a firmer feel, the Purple Mattress delivers less support and heavier individuals may struggle when moving across the surface and getting in and out of bed.
Like the AS3, we found through testing that the Purple Mattress is best suited to sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds. The combination of conforming and responsiveness results in even weight distribution and minimal sinkage. All of our testers in this weight range felt comfortable on the mattress regardless of their position.
In the average weight group, back sleepers awarded the highest ratings. The Purple Grid and dense support layers prevent deep sinkage around the back and waist – common issues associated with this position. Side sleepers also felt good cushioning beneath their shoulders and hips, resulting in even spinal alignment and less pressure. Ratings from average weight stomach sleepers were less favorable because they sank more around the midsection.

How Is the Amerisleep AS3 Built?
The all-foam and hybrid AS3 models are quite similar apart from their support core construction. Both beds feature comfort layers of medium-density memory foam and transitional layers of high-density polyfoam. These components offer deep and even body-contouring that could be likened to sleeping “in” – not “on” – the mattress.
The all-foam AS3 features a 7-inch support core composed of high-density polyfoam, while the hybrid AS3 contains 7-inch pocketed coils instead. Both of these base layers provide good overall stability, but the coils offer more reinforcement – especially along the perimeter. The coils deliver more bounce-back to make the hybrid feel more responsive, as well.
Measuring 12 inches thick, the all-foam and hybrid AS3 are considered high-profile mattresses. Their covers are made from a blend of cotton and polyester
How Is the Purple Mattress Built?
The Purple Mattress begins with the 2-inch Purple Grid comfort layer, which consists of hyperelastic polymer material in an open-grid shape. The Purple Grid combines the even contouring of memory foam and the responsiveness of latex, but the material also sleeps very cool.
The mattress also features a 3.5-inch transitional layer and a 4-inch support core, both of which are made from high-density polyfoam. This substantial support system contributes to the bed’s medium firm feel, as does its low profile of 9.5 inches. However, the mattress may feel less supportive for some heavier individuals because of its below-average height.
The Purple Mattress is encased in a fabric cover made from a blend of polyester, viscose, and spandex blend. The material has a very soft and stretchy feel. Viscose is a highly breathable fabric, so the cover also helps to maintain a comfortable surface temperature for the mattress.
