  • Both beds are medium firm and well suited to back sleepers.

Lull vs. Purple Mattress Overview

Lull vs. Purple Mattress Overview

Lull is an online bed-in-a-box mattress company that has been in business since 2015. The brand’s flagship model is the Lull Mattress. This all-foam bed is constructed with a comfort layer of gel memory foam, followed by a transitional layer made from a blend of polyfoam and latex. The support core is composed of high-density foam. Altogether, the Lull Mattress measures 10 inches thick. It has a medium firm feel that corresponds to a 6.5 on the 1-10 firmness scale.

Purple is another bed-in-a-box company that first launched in 2015. This brand’s flagship model, the Purple Mattress, features a proprietary layer known as the Purple Grid made from hyperelastic polymer material. The Purple Grid contours much like foam, but it is molded into an open-grid pattern that promotes surface airflow and sleeps very cool. The Purple Mattress also contains transitional and support layers made of high-density polyfoam. It measures 9.5 inches thick and offers a medium firm (6.5) feel.

Please note: Purple offers other two other mattresses in addition to its flagship bed, the Purple Hybrid and Purple Hybrid Premier. You can visit our review pages to learn more about these models.

The Lull Mattress and Purple Mattress share a few similarities. For instance, both offer medium firm (6.5) feels and foam-based designs to promote body-contouring and pressure relief for sleepers. Their surfaces are also somewhat responsive due to their comfort and transitional layers. However, there are also a few key differences to take into account when comparing these two models. Read on to see how the Lull Mattress and Purple Mattress stack up in terms of pricing, performance, and customer satisfaction.

Sleep Position Ratings

Lull Mattress

The Lull Mattress has a medium firm (6.5) feel. The memory foam comfort layer conforms closely to the sleeper’s body, while the polyfoam-latex transitional layer is very responsive and prevents excessive sinkage. These qualities make the mattress suitable for back sleepers, as well as side and stomach sleepers who weigh at least 130 pounds. Some people who weigh less than 130 pounds will likely find the mattress a bit too firm.

Purple Mattress

The Purple Mattress also offers a medium firm (6.5) feel, but its comfort layer is slightly thicker than the Lull’s and sleepers will probably feel closer contouring. People who weigh 230 pounds or less – side sleepers in particular – should find the mattress reasonably supportive, but those weighing more than 230 pounds will probably sink too much into the surface.

Our Recommendations

Choose the Lull Mattress if...

  • You prefer the gentle contouring and enhanced support of a medium firm all-foam mattress.
  • You weigh at least 130 pounds.
  • You share your bed with someone and frequently wake up due to movement or noise.
  • You’re looking for a memory foam mattress at a below-average price-point.

Choose the Purple Mattress if...

  • You want a medium firm mattress that conforms a bit while feeling supportive.
  • You weigh 230 pounds or less and sleep on your back or side.
  • You and your sleep partner experience sleep disturbances when the other person moves around in bed.
  • You normally find all-foam beds too hot and want a more temperature-neutral mattress.

How Is the Lull Mattress Built?

The Lull Mattress is constructed with a 1.5-inch comfort layer of gel memory foam. This material is very adaptive and contours closely to the body, resulting in even spinal alignment for side sleepers. The mattress also features a 1.5-inch transitional layer of blended polyfoam and latex. Both of these materials are fairly responsive, so back and stomach sleepers can lie comfortably without sinking too deeply.

The Lull Mattress is also designed with a 7-inch support core made of high-density polyfoam. This material stabilizes the mattress fairly well, although owners will notice some sinkage along the edges when getting in and out of bed. The mattress measures 10 inches thick, making it a medium-profile model.

How Is the Purple Mattress Built?

The Purple Grid comfort layer is a defining feature of the flagship Purple Mattress. This proprietary material is a good option for sleepers who want the contouring feel of foam without the excessive body heat absorption. The Purple Grid is also somewhat responsive, and a thick transitional layer of dense polyfoam prevents excessive sinkage.

The Purple Mattress has a high-density support core that measures 4 inches thick. Most competing all-foam models have taller base layers. The thick transitional polyfoam in the Purple Mattress makes up for its shorter-than-average support core, but edge support for this model is fair at best. Sleepers should expect to feel deep sinkage when getting on and off this model, as well.
