Joybed Mattress Reviews

Written by Tuck Staff

Joybed Mattress Reviews

The Bottom Line.

  • The Joybed is a foam-free hybrid mattress constructed with layers of cotton, wool, and plant fibers, along with durable pocketed coils.
  • Natural, breathable materials offer great temperature neutrality.
  • Joybed’s price-points are very low compared to the average hybrid and shipping is free for all customers.

Quick Summary

Quick Summary

Joybed manufactures and sells ‘no-foam’ hybrid mattresses made with natural-fiber comfort layers. The company’s current selection includes three bed models:

  • The Joybed LX is 10″ thick, making it the lowest-profile option. It features comfort layers of plant fiber, cotton, wool, and cotton padding. The pocketed coil support core is configured with lower-gauge (thicker) springs along the perimeter for added edge support. The LX is ‘Medium’ or a 5.5 on the 1-10 firmness scale, and also includes an organic-cotton cover.
  • The Joybed LXC is 11″ thick. Its comfort system includes two cotton layers, as well as layers of plant fibers and cotton padding, making it the only Joybed model that does not contain wool. Like the LX, the LXC has low-gauge pocketed coils for extra perimeter support and includes an organic-cotton cover. The LXC comes two firmness levels: “Medium Plush”, which we rate as a ‘Soft’ (3) and “Medium Firm”, which we rate as ‘Medium’ (5) in terms of firmness.
  • The Joybed LXP is 12″ thick. Its comfort system includes plant fiber, cotton, wool, and cotton padding layers, along with a transitional layer of minicoils. The LXP has zoned pocketed coils; in addition to low-gauge springs at the edges, the interior springs have different gauges to provide targeted support to various areas of the sleeper’s body. The LXP has an organic-cotton cover, as well. The LXP comes in  ‘Soft’ (4) (which they call Medium-Plush) and Medium (5) (which they call Medium-Firm).

Joybed mattresses are great options for eco-friendly shoppers. The beds have earned certifications from various organizations, including the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS) for the organic-cotton cover and Oeko-Tex for the wool layers.

The natural materials in Joybed comfort layers are also highly breathable, allowing them to regulate the sleeper’s body temperature fairly well. Additionally, Joybed mattresses are much more responsive than many competing hybrids, which makes them better for sex according to most couples. Joybed mattresses are a suitable alternative for sleepers who are dissatisfied with memory foam, latex, and other more conventional mattress materials.

Joybed offers free shipping in the contiguous U.S., and White Glove delivery is available for an additional charge. Each mattress is backed by a 120-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty. Compared to other hybrids, Joybed models have below-average price-points.

What Type of Sleeper is Best Suited to a Joybed Mattress?

Based on our customer feedback, Joybed LX mattresses have received the following grades among sleepers of different weights and preferred sleep positions. At this time, we have not received enough feedback from mattress owners and testers to generate ratings for the Joybed LXC or LXP models; we will update this section as soon as we have sufficient data.

Please note that these ratings are subjective, and that everyone has varying experiences on different mattresses. Sleeper comfort and spinal support are the most important factors when it comes to selecting a mattress.

For more information on sleeping positions please see our guides for side, back, stomach and combination sleepers.

The Joybed LX is ‘Medium’ (5.5), meaning it is optimal for sleepers who weigh between 130-230 pounds. Lighter individuals may to find the LX too firm; the softer versions of the LXC and LXP models will probably feel more comfortable and alleviate more pain and pressure for sleepers in this weight group.

At 10″ thick, the Joybed LX has a profile that is on par with that of the average mattress.

Joybed Mattress Recommendations

  • You want to purchase an eco-friendly mattress at a below-average price-point
  • You would like to explore alternatives to latex and memory foam
  • You and your sleep partner prefer more responsive surfaces for sex
  • You tend to sleep hot.

How Does the Joybed Mattress Compare to Other Beds?

As any consumer does with a product they’re considering, our mattress assessments naturally involve comparing them with other similar products. Be it composition, firmness, or price, we think it’s important to see how Joybed mattresses stack up to other beds.

Joybed mattresses are all-natural and eco-friendly alternatives to other beds made from memory foam, synthetic latex, and other manmade fabrics. The LX, LXC, and LXP each have different firmness and thickness settings, and the brand’s selection should accommodate most sleepers regardless of their weight or preferred position – though the beds are softer and more plush than most hybrids. Comfort layers of cotton and wool, along with a sturdy pocketed coil with good airflow, allow the beds to sleep fairly cool for most. The low-gauge coils along the perimeter ensure sturdy edge support, as well.
