How to Put on a Duvet Cover

How to Put on a Duvet Cover

Bill Fish | 3 Min Read |

A good night’s sleep is a crucial part of a healthy, balanced life. Sleep supports mental and physical revitalization and reorganization, so it’s important to have the right bedding and pillows, along with the right presentation, to prepare for a good night’s rest.  A bed is also the first and last place of you visit each day, so it’s worth paying attention to the details.

Start your morning off on the right foot, and make your bed first thing in the morning. A first accomplishment for the day, it leaves a clear visual surface as you organize your thoughts. A made bed is also the perfect place space to lay out clothes as you get ready.

Different types of bed setups require different preparation. You may be able to simply shake out a quilt and lay it flat, whereas a duvet requires a little more foresight and maintenance.

Whether a duvet is filled with down, eucalyptus, or is a repurposed comforter, everyone knows that fitting the cover can be tricky. Nobody likes a lumpy duvet crumpled in between swaths of empty fabric. But covering your duvet is actually a pain-free process if done correctly, so let us show you how to put a duvet cover on quickly, easily, and perfectly, so your bed looks great and is prepped for your next night’s sleep in it.

There are two main methods for covering a duvet, and both are relatively simple. All garner the best results when the cover is taken fresh from the dryer, which reduces wrinkles.

Putting On Your Duvet Cover Using the Standard Method

The standard way to slip a duvet into its cover requires a second person to get the job done correctly.  Here’s how:

  1. Lay the duvet cover flat on top of the bed, with closures facing the foot of the bed
  2. Each person stands at each corner at the foot of the bed, each holding a front corner of the duvet.
  3. In tandem, shimmy the duvet up the sleeve of its cover until the front corners of the duvet are fitted into the inside corners of the duvet cover.
  4. Continue to shimmy and adjust the duvet into its cover in the back corners too.
  5. Each holding the front corners of the duvet-and-cover combo, shake the bedding until the duvet fits evenly into the cover.
  6. Both people lift their arms together and gently lay the made duvet on the bed.
  7. Button, snap, zip, or tie the enclosures at the foot-end of the duvet cover.
  8. Continue arranging and making your bed.

Putting on a Duvet Cover Using the Roll Method

Inspired by rolling sushi, the roll method is a genius way to ensure perfect presentation for a covered duvet.

  1. Turn your duvet cover inside out and lay it on top of your bed, with the opening facing away from you.
  2. Take the duvet and place it on top of the cover, matching all corners as perfectly as possible.
  3. If your duvet cover has ties, tie the corners down or tie the ties into the loops on the duvet.
  4. Stand opposite of the duvet cover opening and begin to roll the duvet and cover, adjusting the edges as you roll along to keep everything together.
  5. Once the rolling is complete, grab one end of the roll and stuff it into the enclosure of the duvet cover.
  6. Fasten the duvet cover shut and position the roll so that the enclosure is aligned with the bottom of the bed.
  7. Now, begin unrolling. This process will both unroll the roll and pull the duvet cover apart from the roll.
  8. Once the unrolling process is finished, you should have a perfectly inserted duvet in its cover.
  9. Shake out the duvet and continue making your bed.

Tips for Uneven Duvet Covers

Each duvet wasn’t made to fit its cover perfectly. Several duvet covers don’t even come with closures, like snaps or buttons. Here is a simple way to not only manage a duvet-covering session solo but to tackle these issues in the best way possible.

  1. Lay your duvet flat out on the bed.
  2. Turn your duvet cover inside out, with the opening pointed towards your feet.
  3. Lift the inside-out duvet cover and run your arms through each side of it until your hands are in each of the front corners, creating “mittens” over each of your hands.
  4. Walk to the end of the bed, with your “mittens” up in front of your body.
  5. Grab each foot-end corner of the duvet with your “mittens.”
  6. Gently flip the duvet cover over the duvet.
  7. Continue to lift your hands as you pull back the duvet and allow the duvet cover to fully cover the duvet (pro-tip: standing on a stable chair makes the process move faster).
  8. Once the duvet is fully covered, button, snap, or tie its closures.
  9. Continue making your bed
