What You Need to Know about the Essentia Mattress

Mattress Type and Components:

  • Essentia offers latex mattresses. A total of seven different adult-size models are listed in the company’s current lineup; they are listed below in order of price-point (lowest to highest). Please note that all Essentia mattresses measure eight inches (8″) thick.
    • The Bionda is constructed with two layers of organic latex in the comfort system and a three-inch support core made of Dunlop latex. This model is certified as 100% organic.
    • The Stratami features a single-layer organic latex comfort system and a five-inch support core constructed from Dunlop latex. The Stratami is certified as 100% organic.
    • The Classic 8 features a single layer of 5.25 PCF memory foam in the comfort system, and a six-inch support core with a top layer of Dunlop latex and a SoftGripTM cotton base layer (designed to prevent shifting).
    • The Energie Opus is designed with a comfort system made of 5.25 PCF memory foam. The five-inch support core features a top layer of Dunlop latex and a SoftGripTM cotton base layer.
    • The Beausommet has a comfort layer with a top layer of high-density 6.25 PCF memory foam and a bottom layer of 5.25 PCF memory foam. The five-inch support core is constructed with Dunlop latex over a thin cotton base layer.
    • Like the Beausommet, the Dormeuse features a comfort system with a top layer of high-density 6.25 PCF memory foam and a bottom layer of 5.25 PCF memory foam. This model is designed with a four-inch Dunlop latex support core, as well as a SoftGripTM cotton base layer.
    • The Dormeuse Fior is constructed with a comfort system featuring two components: a top layer of ‘Fior Formula’ high-density 6.25 PCF memory foam and a bottom layer of 5.25 PCF memory foam. The three-inch support core features a layer of Dunlop latex over a SoftGripTM cotton base layer.
  • All Essentia mattresses feature a removable, organic cotton cover and a ‘Bucaneve Wrap’ liner located between the cover and the top comfort layer.
  • Additionally, Essentia offers the Grateful Bed JR; this mattress is designed for everyday child use. It features an organic latex comfort layer, a Dunlop latex support core, and an organic cotton cover.

Pros:

  • Essentia offers seven different adult-size mattresses that come in varying firmness ratings to accommodate a wide range of sleep preferences. A child-size mattress is available, as well.
  • Essentia owners claim their mattresses conform closely and alleviate pressure, produce no noise, and have an above-average lifespan.
  • Essentia’s return policy does not include a break-in period, allowing owners to return their mattress at any point during the 60-night sleep trial in exchange for a partial refund. Many competing mattress manufacturers require purchasers to test out their mattress for at least 30 nights before they will be eligible to return it for a refund.
  • In addition to online orders, customers can purchase Essentia mattresses at 20 different brick-and-mortar locations across North America.

Cons:

  • Chief complaints among Essentia owners include minimal motion isolation compared to other latex and latex-and-foam mattresses, as well as weak edge support.
  • All Essentia mattresses feature support cores constructed from Dunlop latex, which has a heterogeneous composition with heavier sediment on the bottom. As a result, Essentia mattresses may feel bottom-heavy and be relatively difficult to maneuver.
  • The price-point of all adult-size Essentia mattresses is significantly above-average compared to other latex models.
  • In order to return an Essentia mattress, customers must pay a return fee of roughly 9% of the original product price. Given the company’s current lineup, this means a charge ranging from $175.05 to $525.78 for returning a Queen-size model.

Product and Price Range: Essentia mattresses are available in six sizes: Twin, Twin XL, Full, Queen, King, and California King; please note that some models do not come in all six sizes. The price of an Essentia mattress will vary by selected model and size; a full price comparison chart is found below. All Essentia mattresses are manufactured in Canada.

How Is the Mattress Shipped?: Essentia mattresses are compressed, rolled up, and shipped in a box. Shipping boxes for Queen-size and smaller measure 15W” x 62L” x 15H”; King and California King mattresses come in boxes measuring 15W” x 78L” x 15H”.

Where Do They Ship?: Essentia ships mattresses for free anywhere in Canada and the continental United States; deliveries to Alaska and Hawaii are not available at this time. Essentia also ships mattresses to international locations for additional delivery fees (see below). International customers must contact Essentia by phone or email to get a price quote for their mattress delivery.

Delivery Fee: Standard shipping is free within Canada (with the exception of Nunavut, Yukon, and the Northwest Territories) and the continental U.S. International deliveries will incur additional shipping charges; according to Essentia, the typical delivery to Europe costs between $450 and $550 (USD) in shipping fees. Customers can also request White Glove delivery for an additional $199; for an extra charge, White Glove personnel will also remove the customer’s old mattress.

Delivery Policy: The delivery policy for Essentia is as follows:

  1. Essentia utilizes UPS, FedEx, and other courier services for standard deliveries, which are made Monday through Friday between 9am and 5pm. Deliveries are guaranteed within two weeks of the purchase date; packages generally take two to five business days for products that are currently in stock.
  2. Customers cannot cancel their order if their mattress has already shipped. Once the mattress is en route, customers may only return the mattress as part of Essentia’s 60-night sleep trial.
  3. White Glove delivery services include in-home mattress assembly and packaging waste removal; this option is available for $199. For an additional (unspecified) charge, customers can arrange for White Glove personnel to take away their old mattress; this must be requested at the point of purchase. Customers who purchase a Zebase or Rise Adjustable base with their mattress will receive White Glove delivery free of charge. Customers who live outside the White Glove service area should contact Essentia for other in-home delivery and assembly options.
  4. If delivery personnel are unable to leave the package at the customer’s address due to physical impediments or safety concerns, they will leave the mattress at the ‘nearest accessible area’.
  5. UPS and FedEx will not call customers prior to their mattress delivery. An owner signature is required for all deliveries. If the customer is not available on the first attempt, UPS or FedEx will attempt to make the delivery two more times; a delivery notice will be left after each unsuccessful attempt. Customers may elect to pick up their mattress at the UPS or FedEx depot or post office store indicated on the delivery notice.
  6. Essentia does not ship mattresses to Air/Army Post Offices (APOs) or P.O. boxes.

Old Mattress Removal: Old mattress removal is offered as part of Essentia’s White Glove delivery service; customers must request this option when purchasing their mattress. Old mattress removal is not available with standard deliveries.
Availability: Essentia mattresses are available on the Essentia website or at one of the company’s 20 brick-and-mortar stores in North America; five of these stores are located in Canada, and the remaining 15 are located in the United States. A full Essentia store map is found on the company’s website.

  4. The warranty will cover the following product defects:
    • Visible indentations or sagging in the sleep surface that measure three-quarters of an inch (3/4″) or deeper.
  5. The warranty will not cover the following:
    • Visible indentations or sagging in the sleep surface that do not measure three-quarters of an inch (3/4″) or deeper, or normal increases in latex or foam softness that do not affect the bed’s pressure-relieving abilities. These issues are considered standard wear and tear.
    • Repair or replacement requests that occur due to mismatched sheets or bedding, changes in the owner’s comfort preferences, or allergies or medical conditions the owner experiences after sleeping on the mattress.
    • Burns, cuts, tears, stains, and other types of physical damage that occur due to owner misuse, improper cleaning, and/or inadequate foundational support.
  6. This warranty is exclusively extended to original owners who buy their mattress directly from Essentia or an authorized retailer. Anyone who buys or acquires their mattress from the original owner or a non-authorized retailer will not receive warranty protection.

Essentia Mattress Sleep Ratings

Please note that the table below does not include ratings for the Grateful Bed JR mattress.

Category Criteria Essentia Rating What Essentia Users Say
Customer Satisfaction Based on data collection, this is an overall customer sentiment regarding the Essentia mattress. 77 (All Models) Essentia mattresses have earned slightly above-average customer satisfaction ratings, due in part to
Durability The average mattress will perform for approximately seven years before it needs to be replaced. Good Latex mattresses tend to last six to eight years, which is longer than the average lifespan of an innerspring or foam-based mattress; according to feedback from Essentia owners, these mattresses are no exception.
Motion Isolation Most latex mattresses effectively minimize and isolate motion, which can cut down on nighttime disruptions. Good Most Essentia owners claim that their mattress minimizes and isolates motion to a significant extent, but some nighttime disruptions do occur.
Sex Bouncier, more responsive beds (such as innersprings and hybrids) tend to be more responsive — and thus, better for sex — than less responsive latex mattress models. Good Essentia mattresses are relatively responsive compared to other latex models, according to owners, but this is minimal compared to the responsiveness of most innersprings and hybrids.
Conforming Latex mattresses are designed to conform closely to the sleeper’s body and alleviate bodily pressure. Good Essentia mattresses conform closely and alleviate a good deal of pressure, which is on par with most latex mattresses.
Temperature Neutrality Latex mattresses may retain a relatively high amount of a sleeper’s body heat, causing the mattress to ‘sleep warm’ as a result. Very Good According to customer reports, Essentia mattresses (particularly all-latex ones) sleep quite cool compared to other latex models.
Off-gassing Some mattresses emit particles when they are unpackaged, accompanied by unpleasant ‘off-gassing’ smells that can last for days. Good Essentia mattresses with memory foam tend to produce more off-gassing than all-latex models, but most owners say the smells dissipate rather quickly.
Edge Support The frames of innerspring mattresses are encased to support the springs and provide a suitable sleeping surface. Latex mattresses, on the other hand, typically have poor edge support, and may prematurely sink where people usually sit. Fair As is to be expected of all-latex and latex-and-foam mattresses, Essentia models offer minimal edge support and some owners report premature sinking at the edges where people commonly sit.
Noise Innerspring mattresses tend to be somewhat noisy due to their high levels of bounciness and responsiveness, as well as squeaky metal components; most latex mattresses produce little to no noise. Excellent According to customer reviews, Essentia mattresses are virtually silent.
Ease of Moving and Rotating Most innerspring mattresses are relatively heavy, but some can be more unwieldy than others. Latex mattresses tend to be lighter by comparison. Fair Essentia mattresses are somewhat difficult to maneuver, due in part to the Dunlop latex layers in the support core (which tends to make them feel bottom-heavy).
