Quick Summary – DreamCloud vs. Purple

DreamCloud launched in 2018. The brand’s flagship bed is the DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid Mattress, also known as the DreamCloud. The mattress features comfort layers of gel-infused memory foam, quilted memory foam, natural latex, and standard memory foam. Its support core is constructed with a memory foam transitional layer, pocketed coils encased in high-density foam, and a high-density memory foam base. The DreamCloud has a Euro-top cover made of tufted cashmere. It measures 15 inches thick. In terms of firmness it is ‘Medium Firm,’ or a 6.5 on the 1-10 firmness scale.

Saatva has been in business since 2011. The brand’s flagship mattress, known as the Saatva, is an innerspring model constructed with a foam-padded Euro-top cover, polyfoam and memory foam comfort layers, a transitional pocketed coil layer, and a Bonnell coil support core. The Saatva is offered in two thickness profiles: 11 1/2 inches and 14 1/2 inches. It is also available in ‘Medium Soft’ (4), ‘Medium Firm’ (6), and ‘Firm’ (7.5) settings.

Please note: Saatva offers additional mattress models. These include the Saatva HD coil-on-coil innerspring designed for heavier individuals, a luxury memory foam mattress known as the Loom & Leaf, a flippable latex mattress known as the Zenhaven, and an adjustable airbed known as the Solaire. This guide focuses exclusively on the flagship Saatva and DreamCloud mattresses. Sleep Rating

Durability
Very Good

The hybrid construction of the DreamCloud and high-density foams indicate this mattress should last at least 7-8 years. Our testing did not find any compromising features.

Motion Isolation
Good

Couples do not report any issue feeling their partner's move on the bed. Our testing found movement was isolated well.

Conforming
Good

Customers and Tuck testing found the DreamCloud's firm feel doesn't conform to the body to a great degree, but it is on par with most hybrid models.

Sex
Very Good

The DreamCloud is responsive and offers enough bounce without giving an excessive amount of rebound.

Temperature Neutrality
Good

Though it uses dense foams in its comfort layers, the DreamCloud's cover and coil support base help to keep airflow across the surface.

Off-gassing
Good

Customers rarely complain of off-gassing issues. In our examination, we noticed slight off-gassing that dissipated after 24 hours.

Edge Support
Fair

Customers ocassionally complain of weaker edge support in the DreamCloud. Our tests backed this up. There is some roll-off with the bed as the perimeter is not reinforced at all.

Noise
Very Good

Our testing found little to no noise emitted from the DreamCloud. Sleep silently on this mattress.

Sleep Rating

Durability
Fair

Most innerspring mattresses last between six and seven years, and Saatva mattresses seem to be on par with this lifespan. However, Euro-top construction is generally linked to below-average durability.

Motion Isolation
Fair

Like other innersprings, the Saatva mattress does not absorb or minimize motion to a significant extent. This may be problematic for certain sleepers, such as couples who share a bed, since minimal motion isolation can lead to sleep disruptions.

Conforming
Good

Saatva features coil-on-coil construction and memory foam in the comfort layer. This allows the mattress to conform more closely and relieve pressure to a greater extent than many competing innersprings — but all-foam and latex mattresses are considered the best option for sleepers that prefer close conforming and targeted pressure relief.

Sex
Very Good

The Saatva mattress is highly responsive and fairly bouncy, although the ‘Plush Soft’ and ‘Luxury Firm’ designs tend to be better for sex than the ‘Firm’.

Temperature Neutrality
Very Good

Mattresses that contain foam and memory foam tend to sleep the hottest. Saatva has a more traditional innerspring construction so our testing along with data analysis show that it's one of the cooler mattress options on the market today compared to all-foam competitors.

Off-gassing
Good

The Saatva mattress emits some off-gassing (due in part to the polyfoam and memory foam layers), but most owners report that the odors dissipate within three to five days of unpackaging the mattress.

Edge Support
Very Good

Innerspring mattresses tend to have optimal edge support and the Saatva is no exception. Customers report a consistent sleep surface (no-roll off when sleeping towards the edge) as well as above-average push back when sitting on the edge of the mattress.

Noise
Good

Roughly 7% of Saatva owners cite noise as a complaint. This is on par with noise complaints from all innerspring owners.

How is the DreamCloud built?

The DreamCloud is constructed with a Euro-top cover made from hand-tufted cashmere that measures 2 inches thick. It also has comfort layers of gel-infused memory foam, quilted memory foam, natural latex, and standard memory foam; these components collectively measure 3 inches thick, resulting in 5 inches of comfort layer padding. This makes the mattress suitable for sleepers who prefer extra cushioning on their sleep surface.

The pocketed coils are encased in high-density foam, which helps prevent sagging in the sleep surface. The coils are also zoned, with thicker-gauge springs located beneath the sleeper’s heaviest areas, such as the shoulders and hips, which results in targeted support and even weight displacement. Other benefits of the DreamCloud include great temperature neutrality and above-average motion isolation.

How is the Saatva built?

The Saatva – like the DreamCloud – has a sophisticated design that sets it apart from many competing innersprings and hybrids. The bed is made with a ‘coil-on-coil’ system consisting of pocketed coils in the comfort system, which provide extra sleeper support, and resilient, steel-tempered bonnell coils in the support core. Additional comfort layers of polyfoam and memory foam provide consistent body conforming, which can help alleviate aches, pains, and pressure points for sleepers.

The Saatva also sleeps very cool due to strong air circulation through both coil layers. Its breathable organic cotton cover also helps regulate the sleeper’s temperature. Additionally, the Saatva is fairly responsive, which many couples say is best for sex, but noise potential is also fairly low.

DreamCloud Sleeper Ratings

The DreamCloud’s ‘Medium Firm’ surface makes the bed optimal for heavier side sleepers, as well as back and stomach sleepers who weigh at least 130 pounds. The bed’s thick profile can also be helpful for heavier individuals, since people in this weight group often struggle getting on and off lower-profile mattresses. The DreamCloud may be too firm for lighter individuals – particularly side sleepers who need extra cushioning for their shoulders and hips in order to experience healthy spinal alignment.

Saatva Sleeper Ratings

The Saatva is available in multiple thickness and firmness settings. The selection should accommodate a wide range of sleepers. The ‘Medium Soft’ setting is a good option for lighter people – side sleepers, in particular – while the firmer settings may be more suitable for heavier back and stomach sleepers. Both profile options are thicker than average, which can also benefit heavier people who struggle getting on and off lower mattresses.
