Brooklyn Signature vs. Purple Mattress Overview

Brooklyn Signature vs. Purple Mattress Overview

Brooklyn Bedding is an online “bed-in-a-box” mattress brand established in 2009. For this comparison guide, we’ll look at the Brooklyn Bedding Signature, which is a hybrid mattress. The Signature features adaptive polyfoam in its comfort and transitional layers, followed by a support core of pocketed coils and high-density base foam. The Signature is available in three firmness levels, which correspond to different ratings on the 1-10 firmness scale: soft (3.5), medium (5.5), and firm (7.5).

Launched following a successful Kickstarter campaign, Purple has been in business since 2015. The flagship Purple Mattress was the first bed to feature the Purple Grid, a proprietary comfort layer made from hyperelastic polymer material. The layer contours to the body much like foam, but it has an open grid shape that promotes surface airflow for added cooling. The mattress also contains a support core of high-density polyfoam. In terms of firmness, the Purple Mattress is considered medium firm (6.5).

Both Brooklyn Bedding and Purple offer additional mattress models, but this comparison guide will focus on the Brooklyn Bedding Signature and flagship Purple Mattress. Brooklyn Bedding Signature Highlights…
  • Adaptive polyfoam layers provide close and even body contouring. As a result, the Signature provides above-average pressure relief for a hybrid.
  • The pocketed coils provide sturdy support for the mattress and reinforce the edges against sinkage when owners get in and out of bed.
  • The coils promote steady airflow to keep the mattress at a cool temperature.
  • Customers can choose from three different firmness levels for their mattress based on their sleep position, body type, and comfort preferences.
Purple Mattress Highlights…
  • The signature Purple Grid comfort layer offers a balanced feel for sleepers that combines the conforming of memory foam and the responsiveness of latex.
  • Even conforming and weight distribution across the surface makes this mattress well suited to people with pressure points and back pain.
  • Thanks to its open-grid shape, the comfort layer does not trap body heat. This allows the mattress to sleep exceptionally cool for a foam-based model.
  • The mattress absorbs movement from sleepers to isolate motion transfer for couples. It is completely silent, too.

Sleep Position Ratings

Brooklyn Bedding Signature

Since the Signature is available in three different firmness levels, the most comfortable feel for this mattress will depend on the sleeper’s body type and sleep position. Beds with the soft or medium feel contour closely to the body and provide ample padding for the body. Side sleepers under 130 pounds will probably prefer these feels. Side sleepers typically require more cushioning for the shoulders and hips in order to align the spine and reduce pressure in sensitive areas. The firm feel may not conform closely enough to alleviate pressure for side sleepers.

Back and stomach sleepers are more likely to prefer the medium or firm Signature models. These positions don’t need as much cushioning because their shoulders and hips are already aligned with the spine, but more support is needed to keep the body on an even plane. The soft feel is more likely to sink for back and stomach sleepers, and this can lead to added aches and pains around the neck, shoulders, and lower back.

Purple Mattress

Since the Purple Mattress is an all-foam mattress available in just a medium firm feel, it will suit some sleeper weights and positions better than others. Side sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds should receive adequate cushioning for their shoulders and hips, ensuring even alignment and less pressure throughout the body. Heavier side sleepers are more likely to sink due to the bed’s foam support core, which does not provide as much reinforcement as the coils found in hybrids like the Brooklyn Bedding Signature.

Back sleepers across all weight groups should find the Purple Mattress supportive. Those weighing more than 230 pounds will sag a bit more than their lighter counterparts, but the responsive Purple Grid offers good overall reinforcement for the body and excessive sinkage probably won’t be an issue. Stomach sleepers, on the other hand, will probably sink more deeply into the mattress. This is partly due to the stomach position, since many people carry a disproportionate amount of weight in their midsection and sleeping face-down can pull the entire body toward the mattress. That said, stomach sleepers who weigh less than 130 pounds appear to find the Purple Mattress quite supportive.

Our Recommendations

Choose the Brooklyn Bedding Signature if...

  • You prefer your mattress with a soft feel, a firm feel, or a mid-level feel that balances firmness and softness in equal measure
  • You experience frequent back pain and/or pressure points
  • You tend to sleep hot
  • You share your mattress with someone else and tend to wake up when they change positions or get in and out of bed

Choose the Purple Mattress if…

  • You prefer a mid-level feel for your mattress that gravitates toward firm
  • You normally feel too warm sleeping on mattresses with foam layers
  • You sleep on your side or back
  • You and/or your sleep partner often wake up due to movement or noise

How Is the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Mattress Built?

The Signature’s comfort layer is composed of TitanFlex polyfoam, an adaptive material that contours to the body much like memory foam while remaining somewhat responsive. Sleepers feel the foam molding to their figure but there is a light bounce on the surface. The bed’s 2-inch transitional layer is made of Energex polyfoam, which is slightly denser and firmer than the comfort layer. The Energex prevents sleepers from sinking too deeply into the mattress and coming into contact with the coil layer. Both of these foam layers are infused with cooling gel intended to minimize the buildup of body heat.

The support core contains 6-inch pocketed coils, which are meant to stabilize the entire mattress and prevent deep sinkage when people sit or lie along the perimeter. The coils also circulate air currents in order to maintain a cool core temperature, which in turn helps sleepers remain comfortable on the surface. A base layer of high-density polyfoam reinforces the coils for added support. Altogether, the Signature measures 11.5 inches, making it a medium-profile mattress.

How Is the Purple Mattress Built?

The Purple Mattress begins with the Purple Grid, which measures 2 inches thick. This comfort layer is made from a hyperelastic polymer material molded into an open grid shape. Many sleepers liken it to firm memory foam or latex due to its gentle yet even conforming and responsive surface feel. The mattress also includes a 3.5-inch transitional layer of high-density polyfoam for extra reinforcement.

The support core of this mattress is composed of high-density polyfoam and measures 4 inches thick. Since the Purple Mattress primarily contains high-density polyfoam, its overall feel is on the firmer side, but the foam provides minimal edge support and heavier individuals still tend to sink excessively. The cover is a blend of polyester and viscose that has a soft, stretchy feel and is also quite durable. The Purple Mattress measures 9.5 inches thick, making it a low-profile mattress.
