  • The Hybrid Latex Mattress offers a balanced medium firm feel that makes it best suited to people who weigh at least 130 pounds.

Brentwood Home Hybrid Latex Mattress Overview

Brentwood Home Hybrid Latex Mattress Overview

Brentwood Home is a U.S.-based brand that has been manufacturing mattresses since 2009. The company is best known for mattresses constructed with natural and sustainably sourced components. This review will take an in-depth look at Brentwood Home’s newest model, the Hybrid Latex Mattress, also known as the Hybrid Latex.

The Hybrid Latex begins with a top layer of natural wool batting that provides some surface-level cushioning and temperature regulation. The mattress also includes a natural latex comfort layer divided into three firmness zones, which ensures strong support for the sleeper’s heavier areas and gentle conforming elsewhere.

Other components include a transitional layer of renewable flax seed fibers, a pocketed coil support core, and a base layer made of recycled denim batting. Altogether, the Hybrid Latex measures 12 inches thick. It is considered medium firm, or a 6 on the 1-10 firmness scale.

Read on to learn more about the Hybrid Latex Mattress in terms of construction and materials, prices and sizes, and performance ratings based on owner experiences and our own product testing. We’ll also see how the mattress compares to other similarly constructed models and provide a brief rundown of Brentwood Home’s shipping, return, and warranty policies.

  • People who weigh at least 130 pounds. The Hybrid Latex is a very supportive mattress thanks to its zoned latex and pocketed coil layers, making it a good option for sleepers in the average weight and heavyweight groups.
  • Back and stomach sleepers. Although some side sleepers may also feel comfortable on the mattress, its minimal conforming and strong support system are best suited to the back and stomach positions.
  • Sleepers who want a very responsive mattress. The Hybrid Latex offers noticeable springiness thanks to its latex and coil layers.
  • Hot sleepers. The Hybrid Latex features breathable wool batting, latex, and pocketed coils to promote airflow and help the mattress maintain a comfortable temperature.

Not Recommended for...

  • Sleepers who prefer deep body-contouring. Like other latex hybrids, this model feels rather supportive and does not conform to the body very closely.
  • People who feel most comfortable on a soft mattress. The Hybrid Latex is medium firm and may feel too stiff for those who prefer a plush surface feel.

Ratings Summary

Our testing team conducted an extensive evaluation of the Brentwood Home Hybrid Latex Mattress. Our review and rating process consists of three parts: in-house evaluation, external sleep testing, and data collection of verified owner experiences. To learn more about our review process, read our methodology here.

Our performance criteria and ratings for the bed are listed in the table below.

As you can see, the Hybrid Latex Mattress has earned mostly favorable ratings across the board. To learn more about each performance category, check out our full breakdown below.

Sleep Position Ratings

As part of our ratings process, we evaluated the Hybrid Latex Mattress across different body types and preferred sleep positions. In addition to physical testing, we surveyed our sleep expert team and analyzed reviews from verified mattress owners and customers. Our findings are listed in the table below.

For more information on sleeping positions please see our guides for side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers.

How Is the Brentwood Home Hybrid Latex Mattress Constructed?

Cover

The Hybrid Latex Mattress features a dual-layer cover. The outer portion is made of organic cotton that has been certified by the Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS), one of the foremost certifying organizations for organic materials. The foundation layer consists of REPREVE, a fabric rendered from polyester and recycled plastic bottles. The Hybrid Latex is equipped with six carrying handles made of REPREVE, as well.

Comfort Layers

The mattress includes a top layer of natural wool batting for added cushioning. Wool is naturally breathable with moisture-wicking properties, so this component can help regulate the surface temperature and keep sleepers cool. The wool also serves as the bed’s fire barrier.

Beneath the wool rests 4 inches of natural, convoluted Dunlop latex. This material has earned a certification from the eco-INSTITUT, indicating low emissions and pollutants during the manufacturing process; and the FSC and Rainforest Alliance, indicating the latex has been sustainably grown and harvested.

The latex layer is zoned, meaning it feels firmer beneath the sleeper’s torso, stomach, and hips for added support. The latex offers a gentler feel under lighter areas of the body, such as the head, neck, and legs. Additionally, the latex is ventilated with small holes to promote airflow near the surface of the mattress.

Transitional Layer

Many mattresses contain transitional layers of dense polyfoam, minicoils, and other reinforcing materials. The purpose of this layer is to keep the sleeper’s body on an even plane and prevent excessive sinkage. For the Hybrid Latex Mattress, this transitional layer is composed of flax fiber, a very durable material that is also renewable.

Support Layers

Like other hybrids, the Hybrid Latex Mattress features a support core of individually pocketed coils. This layer stabilizes the entire mattress to help maintain even support for the sleeper and protect the edges from excessive sinkage. The mattress also includes a base layer of recycled denim batting. This material is very breathable, as well as eco-friendly.

Mattress Height

The Hybrid Latex Mattress measures 12 inches thick, making it a high-profile model. Its tall height allows for a robust coil system without sacrificing comfort layer thickness. As a result, the mattress has a medium firm feel that strikes a balance between contouring and support.

Product Name Firmness Options Support Core Components Comfort Layer Components Cover Components
Brentwood Home Hybrid Latex Mattress Medium Firm (6) Pocketed Coils
Recycled Denim Batting
Natural Wool Batting
4″ Ventilated, Convoluted Dunlop Latex
Flax Fiber Transitional Layer
100% GOTS-certified Organic Cotton (Top Panel)
REPREVE 70% Polyester, 30% Recycled Plastic Bottles (Bottom Panel)

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

The Hybrid Latex Mattress feels very bouncy on the surface. Latex is a naturally responsive material. It conforms to a moderate extent but does not cradle and contour to the body like foam. The coils also contribute to the bed’s springy feel. Like other latex hybrids, this model creates a sensation best described as sleeping “on” – as opposed to “in” – the mattress.

The wool batting provides some surface-level padding, but the Hybrid Latex Mattress has a medium firm feel and is not particularly plush. Most people who weigh at least 130 pounds will receive adequate support from the mattress, but some who weigh less than 130 pounds will find it a bit too stiff.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

Next, let’s take a close look at our performance ratings for the Brentwood Home Hybrid Latex Mattress. These ratings are based on feedback and reviews from verified mattress owners, as well as our own product research and testing.

Durability

The Hybrid Latex Mattress was released in 2020, and we have not had the opportunity to evaluate it against the average mattress lifespan of six to eight years. Our durability rating for the mattress is based on other factors, such as quality of materials and Brentwood Home’s reputation as a mattress manufacturer.

We expect the Hybrid Latex Mattress to perform for about seven and a half years before a replacement is needed. This estimated lifespan is longer than average compared to other mattress types, but also on par with the average latex hybrid. Natural latex is a highly durable material, but over time, it will begin to soften and lose support. This may lead to deep sagging in some areas of the mattress – a common issue for hybrids and other models.

Owners can preserve their Hybrid Latex Mattress to some extent by rotating it head-to-foot every three to six months.

Motion Isolation

To evaluate the Hybrid Latex for motion isolation, we asked two testers to lie down on the mattress at the same time. One tester moved around while the other felt for motion transferring across the surface.

During these tests, the Hybrid Latex demonstrated good motion isolation. The comfort layer is fairly responsive and both testers noticed some transfer when the other person changed positions or got on and off the mattress. However, the mattress did not generate an excessive amount of transfer and we don’t expect couples to experience too many sleep disturbances on this mattress.

Off-Gassing

After unboxing the Hybrid Latex, our testers noticed some initial off-gassing odor they described as faint and rubber-like. Beds with latex layers are commonly associated with these types of smells. Within a few days, most of these odors had dissipated. This is partially due to the coil layer, which helps to facilitate airflow that flushes out bothersome smells rather quickly.

Owners who notice stronger and/or more persistent odors from their Hybrid Latex should consider placing the mattress in a well-ventilated room for a few days before sleeping on it.

Pressure Relief

Our testers evaluated the Hybrid Latex for pressure relief by taking turns lying on the mattress on top of a sensory pad to monitor pressure buildup in the shoulders, hips, and other sensitive areas. They also changed sleep positions to see if pressure increased or decreased on their sides, back, and stomach.

Due to its supportive design and medium firm feel, the Hybrid Latex does not conform very closely. This means people who weigh less than 130 pounds – side sleepers in particular – may not receive enough contouring from the mattress. At the same time, the mattress is robust enough to ensure even, sag-free support and less pressure for most people who weigh 130 pounds or more.

Temperature Neutrality

Latex hybrids commonly offer above-average temperature control, and this model is no exception. The top wool layer is very breathable. Wool has moisture-wicking properties to keep sleepers dry, as well. The latex layer is ventilated to promote added airflow near the surface, while the coils also circulate air to help the mattress maintain a comfortable core temperature.

We recommend this mattress to anyone who tends to sleep hot, especially if they have had uncomfortable experiences with all-foam or all-latex mattresses.

Edge Support

To evaluate the Hybrid Latex for edge support, our testers sat along the perimeter of the mattress as an owner might do when getting in and out of bed. They also took turns lying near the edges to check for feelings of “roll-off,” which are akin to the mattress ejecting the sleeper.

Edge support is a key strength of this mattress. The coils provide sturdy reinforcement along the perimeter and all of our testers experienced minimal sinkage, including those who weigh more than 230 pounds. Owners may notice more sinkage as their mattress ages and the components begin to wear out, but this probably won’t occur until the bed is near the end of its lifespan.

Noise

Our testers did not notice much noise when evaluating the Hybrid Latex Mattress, including tests that involved moving around on the mattress. The coils have potential to become louder over time, so owners should expect some squeaks and creaks as the mattress ages, but pocketed coils have lower noise potential than other coil types. We don’t expect any owners to experience major noise-related disruptions on this mattress.

Sex

The Hybrid Latex is best suited to people who prefer a very springy mattress for sex. Couples shouldn’t sink too much due to the bed’s responsive, medium firm feel, and this allows them to move across the mattress and change positions without sinking too much. The latex also provides some traction, so couples can maintain a single position for longer periods of time. Very good edge support allows them to use the entire surface of the mattress, as well.

Couples who enjoy a closely contouring mattress during sex may not find the Hybrid Latex as comfortable. However, our feedback indicates most couples prefer more responsiveness and less sinking for these activities.

Sleeper Ratings

The ideal firmness and thickness for a mattress largely depend on a sleeper’s body weight, shape, and preferred sleep position. In order to better inform our readers and avoid subjectivity in our review, our team evaluated the bed with sleep testers of varying body types and position preferences.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

Our lightweight sleep testers were divided about the Hybrid Latex Mattress. Side sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds did not experience much contouring, which is often needed to align the spine and reduce pressure for people who use this position. They also found the mattress a bit too firm for their liking.

Back sleepers in this weight group felt very comfortable on the mattress. Thanks to the bed’s sturdy support system, they did not sink too much around the back and waist or feel added pressure due to lack of reinforcement. Stomach sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds did not sink, either, but some said the Hybrid Latex felt too firm.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

As a medium firm mattress, the Hybrid Latex is well suited to people who weigh between 130 and 230 pounds. This was the general consensus among our average weight sleep testers. The mattress conformed closely enough to promote even spinal alignment for side sleepers in this weight group, but the mattress still kept their shoulders, back, and hips on an even plane.

Back and stomach sleepers also gave the Hybrid Latex very good ratings. Lack of support and excessive sinkage are common issues associated with these sleep positions, and the bed’s zoned latex layer offers enhanced reinforcement and maintains an even sleep surface to prevent these problems.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

Like our lightweight testers, our heavyweight testers were somewhat divided over the Hybrid Latex Mattress. Side sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds found the mattress reasonably supportive but some noticed slightly more sinkage beneath the waist compared to other areas of their body. This may affect alignment and pressure relief for heavyweight side sleepers.

The mattress felt more comfortable and supportive for back and stomach sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds. Sinkage did not appear to be a major issue for most of these testers, which can be attributed to both the zoned latex and coil layers. That said, some heavyweight sleepers may find the mattress slightly too soft – in which case, a firm or extra firm mattress may be a better fit.

How Does the Brentwood Home Hybrid Latex Mattress Compare to Other Beds?

When choosing a new mattress, we recommend comparing a wide range of brands and models in order to find the best possible bed. In this next section, we’ll see how the Hybrid Latex Mattress stacks up to other Brentwood Home models and some similarly constructed beds from competing brands.

Brentwood Home Hybrid Latex Mattress vs. Brentwood Home Cypress

The Brentwood Home Cypress is Brentwood Home’s most versatile mattress. Customers can choose between an all-foam or hybrid model. The mattress is also available with an 11-inch profile and a firm (7) feel, or a 13-inch profile and a medium (5) feel.

All versions of the Cypress feature a top layer of charcoal-infused memory foam over a transitional polyfoam layer. The foams respond slowly to the body and contour closely and evenly, whereas the Hybrid Latex’s comfort layer feels more responsive and offers less conforming. The hybrid Cypress feels a bit springier than its all-foam counterpart, but the Hybrid Latex still provides more bounciness.

Prices for the Cypress depend on selected profile and design, but all models are more affordable or on par with the Hybrid Latex in terms of cost. Those who value motion isolation and pressure relief may choose the all-foam Cypress. Additionally, the all-foam or hybrid Cypress may be more suitable for anyone whose firmness preferences fall outside medium firm.

Brentwood Home Hybrid Latex Mattress vs. Brentwood Home Oceano

The Brentwood Home Oceano is another hybrid model. This mattress contains a top layer of organic wool batting, followed by comfort layers of gel-infused memory foam and pocketed minicoils. The support core consists of pocketed coils, and the bed’s “coil-on-coil” design creates a very responsive surface and strong overall support.

Since the Oceano includes memory foam, sleepers will notice more contouring from this mattress than the Hybrid Latex. Motion isolation for the Oceano is a bit better, as well. However, both mattresses sleep reasonably cool due to their wool batting and coil layers, and edge support is very good for each model. Both mattresses offer a medium firm feel, but the Oceano measures 14.5 inches thick and may be more suitable for people who enjoy sleeping on a tall mattress.

The Oceano costs slightly more than the Hybrid Latex, but both mattresses are low-priced compared to the average hybrid. Those who like the body-contouring of memory foam should consider the Oceano, while the Hybrid Latex offers more support and does not sink as much.

Brentwood Home Hybrid Latex Mattress vs. Avocado Green

The Avocado Green is a latex hybrid. The standard model features a top layer of GOTS-certified organic wool over two latex layers and a pocketed coil support core. This mattress has a firm (7) feel. Customers can also opt for a pillow-top that adds 2 inches of latex to the surface and gives the mattress a medium firm (6.5) feel.

Sleepers will notice many similarities between the Avocado Green and Brentwood Home Hybrid Latex Mattress. Both beds feel very responsive, and breathable components allow each model to sleep very cool. Thanks to their durable latex layers, both mattresses also carry longer-than-average expected lifespans. Additionally, the mattresses are too responsive to eliminate motion transfer but they will absorb some movement to minimize sleep disturbances for couples.

The Avocado Green’s price-point is comparable to that of the average hybrid, making the Hybrid Latex Mattress more affordable. Customers looking for a firmer feel should choose the standard Avocado Green, whereas those who’d rather sleep on a medium firm mattress will probably feel comfortable on the pillow-top Avocado Green or the Hybrid Latex Mattress.

Brentwood Home Hybrid Latex Mattress vs. Brooklyn Bedding Bloom Hybrid

Brooklyn Bedding offers a handful of mattress models, but the Bloom Hybrid is the brand’s only bed with latex layers. Customers can choose from three firmness levels for this mattress: soft (3.5), medium firm (6), or firm (7.5). The medium firm feel is very similar to the Hybrid Latex’s, but this wider firmness selection ensures more people can find a Bloom Hybrid model that offers the right balance of contouring and support.

Durability is a strong point of both mattresses. Whether they choose the Hybrid Latex or the Bloom Hybrid, owners should expect to use their mattress for at least seven and a half years. Another shared pro is temperature neutrality. Like the Hybrid Latex, the Bloom Hybrid features natural wool and organic cotton near the surface for added cooling, and the coil layer promotes steady airflow throughout the mattress core.

The Bloom Hybrid’s price-point is comparable to that of the average hybrid, and the Hybrid Latex costs much less. However, we recommend the Bloom Hybrid to anyone who wants a latex hybrid mattress but does not feel comfortable on a medium firm model.

Brentwood Home Hybrid Latex Mattress vs. Saatva

Lastly, the Saatva innerspring is constructed with a plush Euro-top layer padded with foam and fiber fill, followed by polyfoam and memory foam comfort layers and a pocketed minicoil transitional layer. The support core consists of bonnell coils made from recycled steel. Like the aforementioned Brentwood Home Oceano, the Saatva feels very responsive and supportive due to its coil-on-coil design.

Customers can choose from three firmness levels for their Saatva – medium soft (4), medium firm (6), or firm (7.5) – as well as 11.5-inch or 14.5-inch profiles. The Hybrid Latex’s feel is very similar to that of the medium firm Saatva, especially on the 11.5-inch profile. The other options may be more suitable for sleepers who want a softer or firmer mattress. Both the Saatva and Hybrid Latex offer very good temperature neutrality and strong perimeter reinforcement.

The Saatva’s price-point is slightly more than the Hybrid Latex’s, but both mattresses are considered high-value models for their strong performance. For many, a decision between these two mattresses will come down to customer perks. Brentwood Home offers a 365-night sleep trial, which is quite long, while Saatva provides free White Glove delivery – including in-home setup and old mattress removal – anywhere in the contiguous U.S.
