Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Overview

Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Overview

In business since 2012, Tuft & Needle is a U.S.-based brand that specializes in low-cost mattresses and bedding accessories. Tuft & Needle was one of the first prominent online bed-in-a-box brands. The company currently offers three individual mattress models. This review will focus on the Mint Mattress, one of Tuft & Needle’s newest models.

The Mint Mattress is an all-polyfoam bed constructed with a gel- and graphite-infused comfort layer, a gel-infused transitional layer, and a high-density support core. The cover is a polyester and polyamide blend. Altogether, the Mint Mattress measures 12 inches thick. In terms of firmness, it is considered medium-firm, which corresponds to a 6 on the 1-10 firmness scale.

  • Sleepers who prefer a combination of sleeping “on” and sleeping “in” the mattress. The Mint Mattress conforms to the sleeper without cradling their body too closely, and the top polyfoam layers are more responsive than memory foam.
  • People who weigh 230 pounds or less. Although the Mint Mattress has received positive ratings from sleepers across different weight groups, the most favorable responses come from those in the lightweight and average weight groups.
  • Couples. The Mint Mattress offers very good motion isolation and does not produce any noise. These traits make the mattress ideal for people who awaken easily due to their sleep partner’s movements.
  • Those who normally sleep hot on all-foam beds. The Mint Mattress features lower-density comfort and transitional layers that absorb a minimal amount of body heat, allowing the mattress to sleep fairly cool compared to other foam models with high-density layers.
  • Value seekers. The Mint Mattress is reasonably priced compared to other all-foam models.

Not Recommended for...

  • Sleepers who prefer very responsive beds. The polyfoam layers give the Mint Mattress a light bounce, but the bed lacks the responsiveness of traditional innerspring and hybrid models.
  • Those who enjoy the deep conforming of memory foam feel. Just as the Mint Mattress lacks the springiness of beds with coil layers, it also does not provide the pressure-relieving cradle of models with memory foam layers.

For more information on sleeping positions please see our guides for side, back, stomach, and combination sleepers.

Mint Mattress Awards

Based on positive ratings from our testing teams and verified owners, the Mint Mattress has earned the following awards in our mattress guides.

How Is the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Constructed?

Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Layers

Cover

The Mint Mattress has a knit cover made from a blend of polyester and polyamide. The material has a soft, breathable feel. An antimicrobial protectant embedded in the fabric is intended to safeguard the mattress against harmful bacteria. Owners can zip off the top half of the cover and launder it in their household machines.

Comfort Layer

The mattress has a 3-inch comfort layer of gel- and graphite-infused polyfoam. The foam has a density of 3.5 PCF, making it low- to medium-density, and will not absorb as much body heat as high-density foam. The gel and graphite infusions are also intended to make the foam sleep cooler.

Transitional Layer

Beneath the comfort layer lies a 2-inch transitional layer of 3 PCF polyfoam infused with ceramic gel beads. This layer forms a barrier to prevent sleepers from sinking through the comfort layer and coming into contact with the firmer, denser support core.

Support Layers

The Mint Mattress has a 7-inch base layer of 1.8 PCF high-density polyfoam. This base layer stabilizes the entire bed in order to prevent sagging and maintain even support for sleepers.

Mattress Height

The Mint Mattress measures 12 inches thick, making it a high-profile model. The bed’s above-average height allows space for a robust base layer without sacrificing thicker comfort and transitional layers. As a result, the mattress offers a good balance of body-conforming and sleeper support.

Product Name Firmness Options Thickness Support Core Components Comfort Layer Components Cover Components
Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Medium-firm (6) 12″ 7″ 1.8 PCF HD Polyfoam 3″ 3.5 PCF Gel- and Graphite-infused Polyfoam
2″ 3 PCF Gel-infused Polyfoam
Polyester and Polyamide Blend (machine-washable)
Antimicrobial Protectant Embedded in Fabric

What Are the Firmness and Feel Like?

The Mint Mattress is considered medium-firm, or a 6 on the 1-10 firmness scale. The polyfoam conforms closely to the body but also offers more responsiveness than memory foam, and this creates a balanced feeling of sleeping “on” and sleeping “in” the mattress.

The thick comfort and transitional layers offer ample cushioning for side sleepers, which can help improve spinal alignment and alleviate pressure points. The bed’s sturdy support core also maintains an even plane for back and stomach sleepers.

Ratings Breakdown

Performance Ratings

Next, let’s take an in-depth look at our performance ratings for the Mint Mattress. These ratings are based on findings from our internal and external testing teams, along with experiences from verified Mint Mattress owners.

Durability

The Mint Mattress has been available to the public for a few years, but we have not had enough time to evaluate this model across the average mattress lifespan of six to eight years. Therefore, our durability rating is based on the bed’s quality of materials and construction, owner experiences, and Tuft & Needle’s overall reputation.

We estimate the Mint Mattress will perform for about six to six and a half years before a replacement is needed. This is a longer expected lifespan than many competing all-polyfoam models. The bed’s above-average durability can be mostly attributed to its firm support layer, which has proven effective at preventing excessive sagging. The top layers are more vulnerable to body impressions over time, but owner experiences suggest loss of support is not a major problem for most.

To protect the sleep surface from developing body impressions, we recommend rotating the Mint Mattress head-to-foot every three to six months.

Motion Isolation

Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Motion Isolation

To evaluate the Mint Mattress for motion isolation, we asked two of our testers to lie down on the mattress at the same time. One tester moved around while the other felt for their motion transferring across the surface of the bed. During these tests, neither person felt much transfer from the other tester.

All-foam beds tend to offer the best motion isolation because of their below-average responsiveness. Models with springs or bouncy latex layers do not eliminate as much transfer. Although it’s composed of polyfoam layers that are more responsive than memory foam, the Mint Mattress demonstrates very good motion isolation thanks to its all-foam construction.

Off-Gassing

Our testers noticed some initial off-gassing odor when unboxing the Mint Mattress. The smells had mostly dissipated when they re-evaluated the mattress several days later, but there was still some faint odor. That said, the mattress appears to emit less off-gassing than other all-foam models thanks to its lower-density comfort and transitional layers, which do not trap unpleasant smells to the same extent as high-density foam.

All mattresses emit off-gassing when new. Beds with memory foam and polyfoam tend to produce the most odor, but in most cases these smells will clear out in a matter of days, if not sooner. The Mint Mattress is no exception, and we don’t foresee any major odor-related issues for mattress owners.

Pressure Relief

Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Pressure Relief

Our testers evaluated the Mint Mattress for pressure relief by lying on a sensory pad that tracks pressure build-up in the shoulders, hips, and other sensitive areas of the body. Testers also rotated sleep positions to check for increased or decreased pressure when lying on their sides, back, or stomach.

Throughout these tests, the Mint Mattress exhibited excellent pressure relief for most testers across different weight and position groups. The comfort layer conforms closely enough to reduce pressure-points and improve spinal alignment for side sleepers without compromising support for back and stomach sleepers.

Temperature Neutrality

The Mint Mattress offers good temperature neutrality and sleeps cooler than many of its all-foam competitors. This is largely due to its comfort and transitional layers, both of which are made of lower-density foam. This material that absorbs less body heat and sleepers cooler than high-density foam.

The Mint Mattress should be sufficiently breathable for most hot sleepers – particularly those who have found other all-foam beds too warm. However, those who usually sleep very hot may want to opt for a mattress type known for better overall temperature neutrality, such as a latex, innerspring, or hybrid model.

Edge Support

Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Edge Support

Our testers evaluated the Mint Mattress for edge support by sitting along the perimeter as one might do when getting in and out of bed. All of them noted significant sinkage when seated on the edge. The testers also took turns lying near the edges of the bed to check for feelings of “roll-off.” They found the perimeter fairly stable for sleeping, though they did not feel as secure when changing positions.

Typically, all-foam beds offer the worst edge support. Even high-density polyfoam cannot withstand sinkage like the steel coils found in innerspring and latex models. The Mint Mattress performed on par with other all-foam beds in this category, and owners should expect deep sinkage to occur over time.

Noise

During our tests, we found the Mint Mattress was virtually silent when bearing weight. This characteristic, coupled with its above-average motion isolation, makes the mattress suitable for people who experience sleep disturbances due to their partner’s movements in bed.

Low noise potential is a defining trait of all-foam beds. Other mattress types produce more noise due to their internal components, such as squeaky coils found in innersprings and hybrids, or whirring motorized air chambers found in airbeds.

Sex

The Mint Mattress offers more responsiveness than many competing all-foam models, making it better for sex. Couples do not sink too deeply, allowing them to switch positions easily and use the entire surface of the bed, but the foam conforms closely enough to offer decent traction. The mattress is also a discreet choice for sex due to its lack of noise.

Sleeper Ratings

The ideal firmness and thickness settings for a mattress largely depend on a sleeper’s body weight, shape, and preferred sleep position. In order to better inform our readers and avoid subjectivity in our review, our team evaluated the bed with sleep testers of varying body types and position preferences.

Lightweight Sleepers – Less than 130 lbs.

Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Lightweight Sleepers

Our lightweight sleep testers found the Mint Mattress very comfortable. Side sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds noted adequate cushioning for their shoulders and hips, resulting in improved spinal alignment and above-average pressure relief. Back and stomach sleepers in this weight group enjoyed the balance of body-conforming and support.

Lightweight sleepers generally prefer soft to medium-soft mattresses. Firmer beds, by comparison, do not conform as closely or alleviate as much pressure. Although the Mint Mattress is medium-firm, its thick comfort layer conforms provides noticeable conforming while the transitional layer cushions the body and prevents sleepers from sinking too deeply.

Average Weight Sleepers – 130 to 230 lbs.

Tuft & Needle Mattress Average Weight Sleepers

Our average weight testers also enjoyed the Mint Mattress very much. This was particularly true for back sleepers weighing 130 to 230 pounds. The mattress conformed closely to their bodies and alleviated pressure without losing support around the midsection. Spinal alignment improved for side sleepers thanks to good cushioning beneath the shoulders and hips, while stomach sleepers noted even support and little to no sagging.

Medium-soft to medium-firm is generally the ideal range for average weight sleepers. The mattress won’t sink as deeply as softer models, but the comfort and transitional layers conform more closely than the materials found in firmer beds. With its medium-firm feel, the Mint Mattress is very well suited for this weight group.

Heavyweight Sleepers – More than 230 lbs.

Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Heavyweight Sleepers

Our heavyweight testers gave mixed ratings to the Mint Mattress. Cushioning was good for side sleepers, but they felt a bit of added pressure in certain areas. Back sleepers also noted some uneven support around the hips. Over time, this can cause aches and pains to develop. For stomach sleepers in this weight group, their biggest issue was excessive sagging around the midsection. This is a common problem associated with this sleep position, since many people carry excess weight in their stomach and sleeping face-down can cause the body to sink too deeply.

Heavyweight sleepers typically prefer medium-firm to firm mattresses because softer beds are more prone to excessive sagging. Although the Mint Mattress is medium-firm, the polyfoam base layer does not provide the same structural support as the coil systems found in hybrid and innerspring models, which tend to be more comfortable for sleepers weighing more than 230 pounds.

How Does the Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress Compare to Other Beds?

When buying a new mattress, we urge all shoppers to compare different brands and models in order to find the best option for them. In this section, we’ll see how the Mint Mattress stacks up against other Tuft & Needle models and some all-foam mattresses from competing brands.

Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress vs. T&N Mattress

Like the Mint Mattress, the T&N Mattress is an all-polyfoam model with a graphite-infused comfort layer and a high-density support core. However, the T&N Mattress does not contain a transitional layer. As a result, the Mint Mattress feels more supportive.

The Mint Mattress contains more graphite in the comfort layer, but our testing suggests both models offer comparable temperature neutrality. They also isolate motion transfer very well and do not make any noise when bearing weight. Pressure relief is slightly better for the Mint Mattress due to its slightly softer feel, but either bed is suitable for sleepers with chronic pressure point issues.

The Mint Mattress is more expensive than the T&N Mattress, but both models are considered high-value picks due to their below-average prices. Sleepers seeking better overall support should consider the Mint Mattress, but both mattresses earned similar ratings in most of our other performance categories.

Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress vs. T&N Hybrid

The T&N Hybrid features a coil-on-coil design consisting of a microcoil comfort layer and a pocketed coil support core. These components make the mattress very responsive. Strong airflow through the coil layers also help the T&N Hybrid remain temperature-neutral, making it a better choice for hot sleepers than the Mint Mattress.

Another key difference is edge support. The T&N Hybrid’s thick support system reinforces the perimeter very well, whereas the Mint Mattress tends to sink more due to its foam base. However, the Mint Mattress isolates more motion transfer and does not produce any noise, making it better suited for couples than the T&N Hybrid. The Mint Mattress provides more pressure relief, as well.

The T&N Hybrid is considerably more expensive, but still low-priced compared to the average hybrid. This model is a good option for sleepers who prefer the responsiveness and temperature neutrality of a mattress with coil layers, while the Mint Mattress is better for couples and people with pressure point issues.

Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress vs. Casper

The Casper is a mixed-foam mattress built with memory foam and polyfoam comfort layers. Like the Mint Mattress, the Casper has a slightly responsive feel that results in a combination of sleeping “on” and sleeping “in” the mattress. However, the Casper is softer and provides closer body-conforming than the Mint Mattress.

Due to their all-foam designs, both beds excel at motion isolation and do not make any noise. The Casper and Mint Mattress also alleviate pressure for most sleepers – particularly those who weigh 230 pounds or less. Other common characteristics include better-than-average temperature neutrality and minimal edge support.

The Casper costs slightly more than the Mint Mattress, but both beds are reasonably priced. The difference for most shoppers will come down to firmness preference. Those who like medium settings and closer conforming should consider the Casper, while the Mint Mattress is better suited to people who prefer a medium-firm feel and more overall support.

Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress vs. Loom & Leaf

The Loom & Leaf is a luxury memory foam mattress from Saatva. The mattress cradles the body closely to alleviate pressure and align the spine, making it optimal for those who prefer sleeping “in” – as opposed to “on” – their mattress.

A notable advantage of the Loom & Leaf is firmness selection. Customers can choose between medium (5.5) and firm (8) settings. This range should accommodate most sleepers regardless of their weight or preferred sleep position. The Mint Mattress may be more limiting for some individuals – heavier people, in particular – due to its fixed medium (6) setting. However, the Mint Mattress traps less heat and sleeps cooler than the Loom & Leaf.

The Loom & Leaf is significantly more expensive, but customers in the contiguous U.S. qualify for free White Glove delivery including in-home assembly and old mattress removal. Sleepers seeking a traditional memory foam feel will likely enjoy the Loom & Leaf more, while the Mint Mattress is a better choice for those who like the combined feeling of sleeping “on” and sleeping “in” the mattress.

Read our full Loom & Leaf Mattress Review.

Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress vs. Nectar

The Nectar Mattress is constructed with three memory foam layers. The bed has a medium-firm feel but the memory foam conforms very closely to the sleeper’s body, resulting in a deep, pressure-relieving cradle akin to sleeping “in” the mattress. The Mint Mattress has a more balanced feel that combines sleeping “in” and sleeping “on” the bed.

These two models share many similarities as well. Both excel at pressure relief for sleepers across different weight and sleep position groups. They also isolate motion transfer very well and do not produce any noise, making either mattress a good option for people who awaken easily due to their sleep partner’s movements. Lower-density top layers allow the Nectar and Mint Mattresses to sleep fairly cool, as well.

The Nectar and Mint Mattress have nearly identical price-points in a queen size. People who enjoy the traditional, body-cradling feel of memory foam may find the Nectar more comfortable, while the Mint Mattress is more geared to sleepers who prefer a bit more responsiveness.

Read our full Nectar Mattress Review.

Tuft & Needle Mint Mattress vs. Purple Mattress

The Purple Mattress is constructed with the Purple Grid, a signature comfort layer consisting of hyperelastic polymer material. The Purple Grid conforms closely to the sleeper’s body, much like the polyfoam found in the Mint Mattress, but the material is also fairly responsive and highly durable. It also promotes more surface-level airflow due to its grid shape, allowing the Purple Mattress to sleep exceptionally cool.

The Purple Mattress also features a high-density polyfoam support core. However, the Mint Mattress has a much thicker base, and offers better support for heavier individuals. In other areas, the mattresses are fairly similar. Both models offer very good motion isolation and alleviate pressure for most sleepers.

The Purple Mattress is more expensive than the Mint Mattress, but both models are considered high-value due to their sophisticated designs. We recommend the Purple Mattress for hot sleepers and those who prefer sleeping “on” – and not “in” – their mattress, while the Mint Mattress is a better choice for heavier people seeking a more supportive bed.
